Safety and security on public transit cannot wait. Transit riders and workers have the right to be safe, and to feel safe. Marco D’Angelo, President & CEO of CUTA, joined CBC today to discuss rising safety concerns on transit systems across Canada, highlighting how social pressures, housing affordability, and post-pandemic challenges are impacting riders, and emphasizing the urgent need for federal support to maintain safe, reliable, and accessible transit nationwide. This work is part of CUTA’s ongoing commitment to addressing safety challenges across the transit sector. Earlier this year, CUTA released the first documentary of its kind exploring transit safety through the eyes of frontline workers, the people who experience and respond to these issues every day.

Along with helping inform the public about our efforts, CUTA has also published a series of Safety Recommendations to support transit systems as they plan for and address rising safety concerns, grounded in data, industry expertise, and feedback from frontline and operational staff.

    Questions for our transit systems:
    • What safety strategies are making the biggest impact in your system today?
    • Where do you see the greatest gaps or needs for additional support?
    • What resources or tools would help your teams feel more equipped to manage emerging challenges?
    • Are there local success stories your agency would like to share with the national community?
