APTA Seeking Public Comment on New Accessibility-Focused Standard

The American Public Transportation Association’s Standards Program has advanced a new document for public review and comment: Evacuating People with Disabilities from Transit Vehicles and Systems.

As this is a new standard, APTA is seeking broad input from across the transit industry to ensure the document is thoroughly reviewed before publication. Feedback from Canadian transit systems, accessibility professionals, operators, emergency management teams, and other industry stakeholders can help ensure the final document reflects a wide range of operational realities, perspectives, and best practices.

The public commenting process is an important part of APTA’s consensus-based standards development process. CUTA members are encouraged to review the document and provide comments, criticisms, or recommendations during the public review period.

Comments are due by July 4, 2026.
